Introduction

SBScoring started off as a simple calculator designed to aid my son and me in totaling dive scores and to allow us to easily experiment with the trade-off between DD (Degree of Difficulty) and scores. With encouragement from my son's diving coach, the program has grown into something a coach or a parent might use to track scores during a competition.

SBScoring will track up to six (6) divers through as many as eleven (11) rounds. It will automatically total the awards from the judges, after discarding high and low values, and then scale the total based on the DD value and judging method.

New for v1.10:

  • Support for up to six divers.
  • Summary dive sheets- view the a diver's scores on a single page.

Installation

SBScoring is installed just like any other PalmOS program. Simply add SBScoring.prc to the Palm Install Tool and then HotSync your PalmOS device.

For full functionality you will also have to install SBScoring.pdb. Once again, simply add SBScoring.pdb to the Palm Install Tool and then HotSync your PalmOS device.

Main Screen

Main screen The first screen you see when you start SBScoring is the main screen. The controls on the main screen are described from top to bottom and left to right.

At the top of the screen is a drop down list of divers and a lock control to limit the operation to a single diver.

(Suggestion: Using the lock control to track a single diver through several events. Just lock the diver and score one event. Then unlock, select another 'diver', lock, and score the second event. In this case, each 'diver' represents a single event.)

Next there are two rows of buttons that will be used to enter scores from the judges. Simply tap one of the buttons to enter a judge's score.

Beneath the scoring buttons is a display of the judges' scores. For some scoring methods, high and low values are discarded. The values that are used in the calculation are highlighted in a bold font. If you need to change the judge's score, simply tap the displayed value to select it and then tap one of the scoring buttons.

The score calculation is illustrated beneath the judges' scores. The value on the left is the sum of the indicated judges' scores. That value is multiplied by the degree of difficulty (DD) shown in the box. The resulting award for the dive is shown in bold. The DD is adjusted using the arrows to the right of the DD box. The value above the award is the total for the preceding dives. The value below the award shows the new total.

The scroll bar to the left of the dive calculation will scroll display through the previous rounds. The scroll bar does not appear until all dives in the first round have been scored.

The Meet button will display a dialog that shows the scores for all the divers and the number of rounds that have been scored.

The Sheet button will display the dive sheet, with scores, for the presently selected diver.

The previous button, when present, will display the score from the previous dive.

The next button will clear the display in preparation for scoring the next dive. The next button is not active until at least one judge's score has been entered for a dive. When all rounds are complete, the Next button will automatically display the event summary page .

Edit Menu

Edit Menu There are three items on the Edit menu:
Clear Dive
     Clear just the displayed scores.
Clear Sheet
Clear all the scores for the present diver (the present diver is indicated at the top of the main display).
Clear All
Clear all the scores for all divers.

Options Menu

Options Menu There are two items on the Options menu: Event Preferences will display a dialog where you can change the judging method, the number of rounds and the number of divers. The About SBScoring item will the display version number and copyright information for this program.

Event Preferences

Event Preferences The event preferences dialog is where you set the judging method, the number of rounds and the number of divers for the Main Screen. The controls for the number of rounds and number of divers should be obvious.

SBScoring supports six different scoring methods. They are:
2 Judges x 1.5
The judging panel consists of two judges. Their awards are added and the multiplied by 1.5 to produce a score equivalent to the standard 3-judge values.
3 Judges
The awards from all three judges are used to calculate the score for the dive.
5 Judges, drop Hi & Lo
Five judges score the dive. The high and low awards are discarded and the remaining three are used to calculate the score for the dive.
5 Judges x 0.6
Five judges score the dive. All 5 awards are added and the result is multiplied by 0.6 to yield a score equivalent to the standard 3-judge value.
7 Judges, drop 2 Hi and 2 Lo
Seven judges score the dive. The two highest and the two lowest awards are discarded. The remaining three values are used to calculate the score for the dive.
7 Judges, drop Hi & Lo x 0.6
Seven judges score the dive. The highest and lowest awards are dropped and the remaining 5 awards are added and the result is multiplied by 0.6 to yield a score equivalent to then standard 3-judge value.

Event Summary (Meet button)

Event Summary This dialog shows the scores for all of the divers though the indicated round.

Dive Sheet (Sheet button)

Divesheet This dialog shows the scores for a single diver.

Awards are shown as a single digit for each judge. Fractional (1/2 point) awards are indicated by a horizontal bar over the digit. High and low values that have been excluded from the score calculation are struck through by a diagonal line.

At the top of the display are diver selection controls, similar to the ones on the Main Screen. A diver can be selected using the drop down list, and the diver can be locked. Changing the diver and the lock control on this screen also changes them on the Main Screen.
